About NHAMA

The New Hampshire Acoustic Music Association (NHAMA) is a grass roots organization formed to help promote acoustic music throughout New Hampshire, helping to increase awareness of venues, performers, promoters, music stores, lessons, radio stations, dances, workshops and much more.  Our goal is to provide a one-stop web site of information for all listeners of acoustic music. We will be adding other resources for musicians as we develop them, such as listing:

Exactly What Music Are We Talking About?

So, if you are thinking of supporting this site, exactly what music are we talking about? Genre guidelines are blurring constantly. As soon as one is defined, someone alters it. Our first thoughts are bluegrass, folk, old time, ethnic…... what usually comes to mind are your typical “folk music” instruments: guitar, fiddle/ violin, banjo, accordion, harmonica, mandolin, Dobro, upright bass, cello, hurdy gurdy, lute, flute, penny whistle, pipes, bodhran, & other percussion instruments. Last, but not least, the voice! Rather than being exclusive about it, (we didn’t want the role of being music police), we thought we’d let you decide.

Now, if there’s a rock or country band & they pull out an acoustic guitar for an occasional song, there’s probably better places to be promoted. If an acoustic band pulls out an occasional electric guitar, that’s OK. This brings up a questionable point. Many bass players play an electric bass guitar, instead of hauling an unwieldy upright bass, just as a convenience. It is a very widespread practice. I’ll leave it at that.

The last chance for NHAMA to be exclusionary concerns where you live or your venue is located. You have to be headquartered in New Hampshire, (OK, or up to 15 miles over the border) and perform or gig primarily in New Hampshire.
